SILYAS SAUNDERS – NUXALK CARVER
-- Silyas Saunders is a member of the Nuxalk First Nation of
Bella Coola on British Columbia’s west coast. Like many, he
worked as a fisherman and logger from age 14 on, but when he
turned 60, Silyas, began carving. He quickly gained
international recognition and was awarded the prestigious
Native Artist Fellowship from the National Museum of the
American Indian in New York City.
This 23 minute video, produced
jointly by Al Elsey and Barbara Grossman, provides insight into
the life of a traditional Nuxalk artist.
