SILYAS SAUNDERS – NUXALK CARVER -- Silyas Saunders is a member of the Nuxalk First Nation of Bella Coola on British Columbia’s west coast. Like many, he worked as a fisherman and logger from age 14 on, but when he turned 60, Silyas, began carving. He quickly gained international recognition and was awarded the prestigious Native Artist Fellowship from the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City.
This 23 minute video, produced jointly by Al Elsey and Barbara Grossman, provides insight into the life of a traditional Nuxalk artist.
