ABOUT RAKU
Raku
is a style of firing pottery that originated in Kyoto, Japan in the late
sixteenth century. The pieces are taken red hot from the kiln, glazes
molten, and reduced (smoked) in combustible materials such as hay,
paper, sawdust etc. then often quick cooled in water. The process
results in decorative pieces vibrant with energy and fire. Surfaces can
be varied and unpredictable in colour and texture, ranging from
brilliant metallics to muted tones, perhaps enhanced with patterns of
crackle. Clay surfaces are black where unglazed. Raku is strictly for
ornamental purposes and is normally purchased for its aesthetic beauty. |
