John Lyon: Home, Dear Home                 ....New CD Release!

This CD honours the legacy of the renowned folk song collector Phil Thomas. The materials on this compilation were drawn primarily from the collection of songs he gathered through field recordings and years of research into the musical heritage of the Pacific Northwest. During his life, as musician and teacher, he became a passionate and leading exponent of folk music on the northwest coast; and was largely responsible for disseminating this heritage, through publications and performance, to a diverse array of performers who now 'carry the torch'. Captured here, then, are the spirited performances of 40 musicians from all over the Pacific Northwest who, in arranging and representing this material, demonstrate the integral link between the folk song collector and the community he serves. Taken together, these performances offer a valuable insight into the mainstay of the folk music tradition; namely, the venerable art of sharing. It was Phil's heartfelt mission to keep this heritage alive by handing back to us our own stories; and his tools were simply the mechanism of singing and sharing.
Folk song agitator, Utah Philips summed him up best when he said: "If folk song was the engine, then Phil was the grease." So he was; but you're driving now, and he leaves you this map. May your journey be a heartfelt confluence of love and devotion and may you arrive inspired.
The songs heard here were culled from two principle events: a tribute concert to Phil, held at St. James Hall (Vancouver, B.C.; Nov. 12, 2006), and the Vancouver Folk Song Society's 48th Anniversary event (Sept. 16, 2007). As well, there are a number of studio recordings interspersed, with Phil's blessing, to round out the scope of his collection.
Most of the songs recorded here are available in print in the newly expanded second edition of 'Songs of the Pacific Northwest' by P.J. Thomas (Jon Bartlett [ED.]; Hancock House Publishers Ltd., Surrey, B.C.). But be advised that this companion book of songs represents only a small portion of Phil's extensive collection housed at the Provincial Archives of British Columbia in Victoria. The few songs not found in the book have been included here at Phil's own request.*
Now dear readers, take up these songs, sing them with spirit, and pass them on - as Phil would have. And welcome to the Folk Tradition.                                                           - J.S. MacEachern

Cariboo Road Music and Skookumchuck Services Ltd. gratefully acknowledges the participation of Steve Edge and The Rogue Folk Club, Julius Fisher of workingtv (workingtv.com), the Vancouver Folk Song Society, Goldrush and Spin Digital Media Corp.
